There are more than 5,000 mammal species and only six are known to go through menopause; humans, narwhals, belugas, orcas, false killer whales and short-finned pilot whales.

Some researchers are investigating whether other species, such as certain elephants or primates, may exhibit menopause-like traits, though these are not confirmed.
