One might not expect 12th Century Yemen/Indian ocean to be the sort of liberatory setting where gender norms, classism, & misogyny are specifically tackled with such effectiveness & beauty.
But, and I say this as someone who has had trans patients having been harassed by Chaiya Raichik:
What an incredible journey & ending I did not see coming (though I really should have).
A lovely fantasy fiction tale historically placed by an author whose career as a Historian of the Middle East was derailed by the 2008 Great Recession.
