Thank you to all who enjoyed our April Fool news post - it’s been updated. We DO value contributions of file format support, but they are not our main priority!

In other news, GIMP 3.0.2 for Windows already had 1.6 million downloads in 10 days - and that does not include the Microsoft store.

change your name
It's 2025 and people are still complaining about the acronym??

Edit, since this person blocked me and I couldn't reply to the message below:

Yes, because the program is already well known for what it is and the world doesn't revolve around that acronym.

It's just a silly thing to complain about. I would agree if there was some kind of ill intent behind it.

Also, the fact you blocked me without letting me elaborate makes me believe you are not someone reasonable to talk to, bye.

we are aware that the name does cause some pain for some people. We plan to discuss it in more detail at our next face-to-face meeting. It’s not as easy to change as it sounds, may cost a few thousand euro in legal fees, and hurt people who make a living from GIMP training. Those are not reasons to take no action, but they are reasons to consider carefully what exactly to do and how and when.
Do the right thing.

If you create a fund only to be used for name change costs and I will donate $50 and promote the fund in every space where I am active. Others would too, you’d have the costs covered within a day.
thank you for your support. Really, i mentioned the cost and the legal issues just to try & show people there’s more to it than renaming a binary. But i will relay this message to the rest of the GIMP team when we discuss it.
You can count me in for donating to a fund that helps the GIMP org do a name change for the software. I'd get my spouse to support it as well.
I think complaining about the name feels a bit childish. Particularly given that GIMP is used in various countries, where English is not the main language. Important is that the program does what you want it to do.
