The point is to create a local market for pharma companies to produce in the US.

This is not insane: the free market trade economic model, where 'you make X better than I do and I make Y better then you so let's trade' is lovely but ignores the real-politik of how imbalances and tax avoidance moves power and money.

A solid domestic manufacturing base isn't a horrible plan. Ironically I believe most 'Irish' pharama products aren't made in Ireland at all & never go there

I know someone involved in pharma, and for some therapeutics some component will be manufactured in the UK, sent to Ireland for EU certification, then back to the U.K. or elsewhere for packaging/final prep

Right. I don't know much but read an article recently that suggested Ireland is a post box for a lot of pharma products produced elsewhere. This is a big international trend for many industries. The grain trade happens extensively in Geneva for eg. The grain never goes anywhere near Geneva.

This stuff is largely about tax I presume?

it’s for regulatory compliance mostly, there’s been an increase in pharma manufacturing in NI because from there it’s a quick drive to the EU and get certified

I'm not suggesting for one instance that anything he is planning is good, sensible, or practical. But it is a fair point to say that the way industries now channel invoices separately from physical goods, production and sale points entirely unrelated, is completely mad for society.

He doesn't care about society of course. He is just into a bullying form of colonial domination (AKA Fascism).

And yes - I think he could ignore IP in a heartbeat...

Several years ago, Harvey Norman (Australia) started selling video games to customers in Australia through the Harvey Norman (Ireland) website. The sales were handled by HN (Ireland) and the games were distributed by HN (Australia). The physical games never left Australia, but the sales all took place in Ireland (for Australian Tax purposes). This was all legal.
HN did it as a protest against a recently introduced high VAT rate on video games.

100%. Anyone who's read 1984 will remember that the key for totalitarians is to keep getting the population to recognise the other of the 3 global parties as 'the enemy' as they constantly switch alliances in a permanent global war.

The tariff aspect of every conversation is ridiculous. I assume there are pharmaceutical manufacturers in the USA just like there are in many other countries. Listening to him is frustrating as he only knows how to intimidate and threaten and bully. He never learned to engage.

I don't disagree about him personally. A nastier man it is hard to imagine - though those he's surrounded himself with come close.

He thinks that in a tariff war, the US will overall come out stronger than those they are trying to punish. I have no idea if that is true or not (and I'm suspicious of anyone who claims they do). But it's no way to behave - and relations are breaking very permanently right now which is dangerous all round
