they call it self hosting and being part of a webring
the idea of a federated hosting platform is pretty interesting though..

solves the problem that many more people want websites than are willing to host, the undercommit that comes with renting your own vps, and implicitly creates a network effect via federation: Linking to another federated webhost could be detected locally and shared via activitypub
join one of the thousands of pubnixes that offer free web/gopher/gemini hosting? like https://sdf.org, https://tildeverse.org , https://freeshell.de

i really don't understand what else can `federation' in this context mean.
Again, while these viable solutions, they all have high a barrier for folks without the knowledge or skills to get it setup.
Is having to learn how to do something now considered a barrier? If I was able to do it as a child, I'm pretty sure most people can handle it. I'm not a genius by any means.

Not necessarily. You're always going to have to learn new things in order to enact change. But I see a problem when folks already having those skills make everyone go down the same path rater than using their smarts to make it easier to enter. It's gate-keepy as all get out.
Let me get this right:
> I wish there was a thing.
There is a thing.
> It's hard.
It's not
> Puke.

Good luck, I guess.
Doesn't seem like you really understand what's going on here, but you sure do have an opinion. Nice reply-guy energy 👍
if nobody in your replies understands what you’re trying to say, then maybe you should explain better what you even mean by “federated webhosting”
Yeah, I'm just looking to riff and perhaps should have been more clear about that since most of these replies were beyond unhelpful. Oh well.
Brother, Reid answered your question with what you were asking. NeoCities == GeoCities. Literally what they based it on. But if you really mean " federated Geocities " no, no one is doing that. That makes zero sense to me. That would have to be a sort of webring on top of free host sites like geocities / angelfire, etc I guess so you could browse the various sites?

well, geocities had a point-and-click gui for website creation iirc; using it was optional, and made it so that people who don't code can also have a website

(Am I remembering right? That was on geocities, right? a java thing)
