Analysis: "Israel could get expelled from UN if it bans UNRWA"

Israel wants UNRWA closed because UNRWA has a specific mandate to look after Palestinian refugees & to ensure their right of return.

"Israel's UN membership was conditional upon Palestinian refugees' right of return, but Israel has always rejected it.

The Israeli government seems to think that if UNRWA no longer exists, "then the refugee issue must no longer exist."

Time to expel Israel from the UN? What would be the consequences?
Only veto is in the Security Council. If the wider UN voted for it I'm not sure it could be thwarted.
The General Assembly can de-credential all of their delegates independently of the Security Council, resulting in a de facto suspension of their membership because they wouldn't be able to participate in any proceedings.

Much appreciated, Bilal. If you happen to have a direct link to the info, I'd be grateful. 🙂

@russellt
Of course. It's mentioned in here: https://opiniojuris.org/2024/10/09/israel-must-be-expelled-from-the-united-nations/

Apparently that's also the mechanism by which Apartheid South Africa was suspended after SC members vetoed a formal expulsion (because of course they did).

Francesca Albanese gave recently a lecure called "Palestine: the tomb of international law?" It seems obvious to me that the interrogation mark can be removed...
