Slavery was limited in the US in 1865 by the 13th Amendment to the Constitution. #Mississippi finally gave its support only 28 years ago (and ratified only in 2013).

Only 3 years ago was a bill introduced in Congress to actually outlaw #slavery. To date, it remains legal in the US: any citizen convicted of a crime may be enslaved.
