Anne Lister is presented in the BBC's 'Gentleman Jack' as a good person, for which I am grateful, because she wasn't a good person. She was a fascinating person. She was a real person. She makes mistakes, she writes them out in her diary in soul-stabbing detail, and then she learns from them. She does not repeat her mistakes. What you see from her life is how hard it is to be a person. I think most of us simply cheat, and her example exposes it.
