I'm trying to ween myself off the metaverse, and this is like the fourth time I've tried to use Mastodon since COVID-19 began. I like the *idea* of open-source social media but the UI is never as pretty, IMHO.

I like how quiet it is on here compared to FB and IG. But it's also a bit...too quiet on my timeline.

I live in #Ottawa, and I like #chess, trying different #pizza recipies, I geek out over #coffee and #fountainpens. I used to have a podcast and wouldn't mind getting back into it.

When I started out two years ago I just followed a lot of people, who also followed back quite organically. I also moved from a large instance to a smaller one more fitted to my fandom interests, and made a lot of friends from there. I am extremely happy there are no ads, and this is a much different experience than Facebook. I also have friends in the fountain pen community here (penfount.social). Sometimes it's just a matter of reaching out.

Have you tried to follow hash tags, you're interested in? That should fill your timeline reasonably quick, I guess.

When I started here, I found a hand full of people I knew, and then went through their follower lists. There were more people, I knew, and so I grew my following list. Maybe, that's an option for you as well.
