Daughter, PhD student in Australia and member of PhD student groups involving folks all around the world, has been warned (as have all the others) not to travel to or even via the USA for conferences without scrubbing ALL social media and private info (e-mail, etc).

This is government advice, not just students talking to students.

The world is going to have to align around the USA, rather than with it.

A burner phone, or a 'clean' phone, could be seen as hiding evidence. USAis now an Authoritarian State, and the least that can happen to foreign travellers, is an immediate return to their own country.
IMV, they would be better off not even trying to enter the US.
Agreed, and yes, a spotless (read: empty) social footprint is a very red flag, even in a place like Australia. Clean, but with signs of wear, would be best.

Or change travel plans appropriately 👍
Could you pls elaborate a bit?

Given The Great Unwashed, & i daresay prolly also many bureaucrats & pollies, still have no idea about the fediverse, maybe even still have not even heard of it at all, much less understand or {{{gasp}}} use it, does "social footprint" in this context mean merely all the cesspit s/m? I'm curious coz, eg, if it does, then [il]logically i must be a major player in the eyes of all the spooks, having deliberately never used any of that shit.
I'm going to guess algorithmic socmed. But text convos with like-minded pals should def be scrubbed. @PeterLG
Ta. Still curious though about my original question. Still egotistically using moi as an example. Dropbears are like that.

Clearly the arseholes would find nothing by me in any algorithmic cesspit media, so would that be Strike 1? Then with the fediverse, how would they know? My account is anonymous & all my internet access is via VPN, i try not to mention any uniquely identifying info like my name being Murgatroyd Millicent McGuffin, my third hand being a medical mystery, & my address being ... hey, wait a minute, i see your game here, you almost tricked me into mentioning my home amongst the gum trees, with lots of plum trees, a sheep or two, a kangaroo, a clothesline out the back, verandah out the front, & an old rocking chair... you sneaky bugger.

PS: Fuck Trump ... haha, you spying magamorons, stick that in your pipe & die of lung cancer from it.

Sorry Peter, where were we again? 🤷‍♀️🤪
A very good friend of mine, retired ADF, said do not bring anything of record in with you, apart from entry documents. Not even a notebook. Only if you must go there. Best avoided for a few years, or more.

The USA has always had this undercurrent, now it is mainstream. Remember the person a decade or so ago who was working on some complex maths on paper on a flight in the USA. He was reported for suspicious activity by a passenger.
