We ask the @EUCommission to halt an agreement negotiated between #Europol and #Egypt that could legitimise illegal Egyptian police practices and open the door to a harmful sharing of personal data.

The EU is negotiating a working agreement between Europol and Egypt in the field of law enforcement. This happens despite flagrant human rights violations and political repression by Egyptian authorities.

Read our open letter, co-signed by 41 organisations and experts:

Pictographic-style visual. Eyes looking through barbed-wire, framed by binary digits. There is an "open letter" in one corner and the EDRi logo in another. A heading says "Civil society raises concerns over Europol-Egypt cooperation agreement".
Hossam Baghat, executive director of the Egyptian Initiative for Personal Rights – which co-signed the open letter – was arrested last Thursday on charges of “terrorism” and “broadcasting false statements”. Baghat has since been released on bail.

Our concerns that the EU could enable further political repressions if it signs #Europol-#Egypt cooperation agreements are real. We stand in solidarity with our partners in Egypt fighting for human rights.
