The period after #Reconstruction in the
US, the one you probably didn't study in high school, is often called Redemption. It is a reference to the "Redeemers" the KKK chief among the Redeemers.

The parallels to that period are interesting. Corporate personhood became a major thing using 14th A to justify it while Jim Crow was created negating the 14th A for the very humans it was intended to protect. Tarrifs instead of income tax created the "Gilded Age" which collapsed the economy in 1929 1/5

Heather Cox Richardson's books touch on this period.

But the short short version is after the Civil War the Klan (and other redeemers) tried to reclaim the South through terror. Grant created to DOJ to *successfully* crush the Klan (ever wonder why hard core conservatives hate the DOJ?). 2/5

with the terrorism route defeated and with Northern capitalist power solidified they looked to expand their power into the South and allied with former Slavocracy members by 1877 and the GOP abandoned Black men (voters) at that time in favor of more money.

The Colonizing War of Spanish American War 1898 reunited the White masses in zeal for conquest while the Court that gave corps personhood stripped rights from POC. 3/5

related: with the end of the Gold Rush in California and the beginning of the transcontinental railroads (plural) plus rushes to other precious mineral fields (silver, etc) the influx of Chinese folks increased.

So the bigots in DC created the first border partols especially with the Chinese Exclusion Act.

All built to build a wall around white rich men's power in reaction to, arguably the Civil War. 4/5

an interesting book that looks at resistance to this period is The Families's Civil War, which explores the fight of Black people, especially women, against all of this, starting with the Civil War and going through their pension fights into the 1920s.

Addendum: the really wild thing is, if you think a reaction to the Civil War was still going on 40 years later is odd, wait until I tell you how the Haitian Revolution (1791) played a huge role in ALL of the above and still reverberates to this day.

It was no accident Trump started telling lies about Haitians. Stephen Miller probably wakes up in a cold sweat from nightmares about that Revolution.

White supremacists HATE Haiti because it proves their entire world view is a mountain of bullshit.

What source would you recommend for learning about the Haitian rebellion and its context?
Thank you, Mary.
Thank you, Philip. Sounds fascinating.
