I just installed a new set of smoke alarm / carbon monoxide detectors.

I've never installed them myself before, so I was surprised to learn that you are supposed to test them once a week, and vacuum the vents every three months.

PSA: If you haves smoke alarms or carbon monoxide detectors, check the manufacturer's advice on how often to test & how often to clean. 1/n

After a lot of research, I got an X-Sense Smart Smoke Detector Carbon Monoxide Detector Combo set + base station.

The deciding factor, on top of good reviews, was that I can test the units weekly with the phone app instead of pressing a button on the units themselves.

I'm short, I don't want to fall alone in the house in the pandemic, it makes a difference for me.

You have to list the device locations in the app. There are obvious preset choices (like "living room"), or you can customize. In keeping with my Space Station Life, I gave them all spacey names: Sleep Pod, Solarium, Hygiene Station, etc.

Amusing myself is part of how I survive my isolated life. 🚀 😂

I also have a natural gas leak detector on order (gas furnace).

I went with Kidde brand, because in addition to good reviews, it's more sensitive than most detectors, and in the case of a gas leak, early detection can save lives.

How did this adventure start?

I was replacing batteries to start the year right, a CO detector failed, I discovered it was 7+ years past end of life, & that sent me down a rabbit hole of testing and then upgrading the safety equipment in my home. I'm glad I found out in a non-crisis situation with time to fix things. 5/n
I had a gas leak scare a few years ago, and a whole gaggle of firefighters kindly (and very quickly) trooped through my house to check it out.

I didn't know at the time that gas leak detectors existed, or I would have bought one right away. I learned about them while looking into smoke detectors and carbon monoxide detectors. I wish the firefighters had suggested it -- at least now I will spare them false alarms in future. 6/n
Home Safety PSA

1. Every home should have smoke alarms. Many need carbon monoxide detectors.

2. Have natural gas in your home? Get a gas leak detector.

3. Check the manufacture and end of life date on your smoke alarms (and other safety gear): they wear out. If past date, then replace.

4. Check the testing, maintenance & cleaning advice from the manufacturer of your safety detectors.
