Women's Budget Group's view on tax reform:

'The tax system needs substantial reform to make it more progressive & inclusive, and to challenge the view of tax as a burden. Ensuring that wealthy individuals & large corporations pay their fair share, and reducing the allowances by which tax can be avoided, could raise much needed additional revenue'!

Taxation is a social good, but often fails to fulfil this purpose due to its (politicised) 'allowances'!

We have this bonkers dichotomy in my instutute (ICAEW) where official training says tax avoidance is not acceptable, while much of the profession exists to facilitate exactly that. Have been wondering about getting myself kicked out by pushing this dichotomy insistently - coz you know which way they will jump if a spotlight is brought to bear on it. The ethics training - mandatory since last year - will get quietly updated... etc.

Tax is indeed a social good. To be celebrated.
ha ha, yes really good point.... (and boosted)
While I agree in principle, I have to admit that starting a business (about 15 years ago now) changed my perspective on that somewhat. Tax was always the biggest expenditure and made it substantially more difficult to hire people - it is a LOT and you better pay it on the day or else. The burden on a small business is really substantial. Well at least here in .nl.
