It's interesting that Ghost (1990) was directed by Jerry Zucker, but actually, it is mostly comedy. It's a comedy film with some romance parts.

It's hard to say how good Zucker's directing is, because he made mostly comedies, but I think part of the success is that the acting is pretty good for most characters.

Whoopi Goldberg makes the movie worth watching, and is by far the best part, but Demi Moore is really good too, even though most of what she does is look sad and cry.

The guy who plays Sam's friend Carl is good as a sweaty nervous crook who's scared for his life. He comes across well as a guy who's out of his depth and I think that's down to the writing of the screenplay.

Towards the end it does get a but touching. The part where Sam is sitting beside Demi Moore on the sofa - next to her but not able to touch her is nice. And I'd say the strength of these scenes are down to the writing, the building up of story.
The movie could have been better if it had perhaps included a more complicated concept of good and bad. It's a fantasy world where criminals get dragged away by shadows and good people - like, um, bankers - go to heaven.

It's simplistic and cheapens the movie.
There are also nice details in the movie, like when Carl nervously shoots at a lock to open a door, he misses and hits a light switch which fizzles.

There's details like that throughout the movie and they make the scenes much more enjoyable. I'm pretty sure a lot of Goldberg's parts were ad libbed, which is why they're so good.

Another thing to mention is how effective the special effects are, since a lot of it is very simple cinema trickery. Very simple effects carry a lot of the scenes.
Another thing that's quite hilarious is how Sam proves to Molly Oda May is a real psychic by listing off events in their life.

Eventually it comes down to Molly wearing an ordinary grey t-shirt which Sam remembers he spilt Margarita down! I think if the film went on any longer he'd be saying: And do you remember that time I put that sock back in the washing machine and washed it twice? Or that time I walked in the room but got caught on the door handle?
