#Counterfire | Ten takeaways for the left from the Trump victory – weekly briefing

"One repeated message when working class people were interviewed was that the Democrats looked down on them, and were simply part of a wealthy clique that didn’t understand the problems of ordinary Americans."

Good grief. What he said... the silver spoon candidates who want to destroy the safety net are somehow "more in touch" than the candidates who want to provide housing and control inflation...

Well, we're talking about perceptions, and what has anything you just posted done to expel such perceptions?
Yeah, these two posts were right above each other on my timeline, and I was shaking my head over how this can be.

It's hard not to be smug and dismiss them as ignorant, though I know it's not helpful. I don't know how to dispel those perceptions in people who live on Fox news and similar.
Out of all the analysis I've looked at, I found that most intriguing. I mean, it might not be a majority view amongst the working class, but possibly enough of a held view to swing the vote.

I think we have it in the UK too, with both Johnson and Farage. Both are posh, rich twats, but they somehow appeal to the working person.

It's like their sloppy, undisciplined nature makes people feel a connection to them.
