The "#SexPistols" were created by a record producer to market sex toys. They WEREN'T an ORGANIC cultural creation like Patti Smith and Tom Verlaine. Those people knew how to tune a guitar and didnt market the idea of beating on people or killing oneself with drugs and alcohol like Sid Viscous (sik). Fools. You WERE had.

For his next band, formed to promote the "Sex" clothing shop he ran with Westwood in London, McLaren picked out another radical political ideology from history. The Sex Pistols would be "anarchist," and so they would not be joining a movement with real armies, economies, and geopolitical power locked in conflict with the West. When McLaren drew on the ideology of the New Left as he understood it, and especially France's Situationist International, he found much to like in the elements that laughed at discipline and authority, were confrontationally anti-hierarchical, and refused to ever make concrete demands. The idea, instead, was a total "negation" of this society, a "voice that denied all social facts, and in that denial affirmed that everything was possible. "

On the other hand kids growing up in polarized right/left bubbles thought being a leninist was as radical as you can get (little that they knew).
Then punk-rockers come and throw the word anarchy around and "kids had to go and burst that bubble"

Bevins take is that it shaped the way the brazilian and other revolts' young people's worldview. Its a really good book, but note, his Jakarta method book was widely praised, but this one... an analysis of where did the revolutions go wrong, was on the cutrate shelf at the bookstore a year after it's printing. You'd think activists didn't want to learn from their mistakes.
