GIMP 3.0 is released, check it out!

https://www.gimp.org/news/2025/03/16/gimp-3-0-released/

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who contributed in any way - from testing and submitting bug reports through to designing, coding, fixing, packaging, testing some more, translating, documenting, hosting, administration, so many people, so much work, so much to be thankful for!

Welcome to GIMP 3.0!

Congratulations !
Just a note that you linked to what I assume is the testing site :) You probably meant https://www.gimp.org/release-notes/gimp-3.0.html

Congrats on the release!
thanks! Fixed!
Hell yeah! Congrats!
Congratulations
Let's goooo!!!!
put modern editing features in you cowards!
pretty sure pull requests are open
FYI: “Fuck you” uses less chars, and means the same thing. HTH!

Please keep it civil - thank you.

GIMP is produced by volunteers. If you want specific features, yes, please file issues. If you want to be on the design team join the design team. But without code being written by volunteers, there won’t be changes. Vague suggestions like “modern editing tools” are hard to implement.
I really think you should sell the software binaries like #Ardour does. Not less than US $100. Free updates until next major version.

Many human beings will always be ungrateful for what they are given for free without payment.

to be fair, many people are also ungrateful to things they paid for...!
Yes, but at least you'll get some funding for development out of it. Maybe even some insight into what features paid users are missing. Right now, complaining is free without much benefit - instead you have to put in time and effort to reply.
Thanks! We do have patreon links for some of the developers, and people do donate. Development direction is partly what interests the volunteers (since they are volunteers!) and partly informed by the thousands of requests and issues we get on gitlab and elsewhere.
Congratulations to the team for all the hard work!!

Never mind the trolls and keep going!!
J’espère qu’il sera inclus à Debian 13 ou alors dans les backports packages.
congratulations to the whole team!
wow, grats!
Would've been a great opportunity to change the name.
What's wrong with the name?
So this is a swearword for gay people? I did not know this.
The word hast more then one meaning:
https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gimp
So does another very offensive word for gay people starting with F. Doesn't make it ok.
Would anybody be interested in a rebranding fork? We leave everything as it us, but change the logo, name, which means making a new repo, doing some changes to the website contents, registering a new url, and then advertise in thr community why the change.
and also change the plug-in API, rewrite 10,000+ plug-ins and scripts, courses, documentation, 70+ language translations, find hosting for > 100K downloads/day...

Changing the name is a possibility for the future; for now we have what we have. A hostile fork is always possible, but you do need a team of developers.
I understand the scope of work and don't expect miracles. Perhaps rewording your FAQ would make it seem a little less hostile to the idea that the name might be inappropriate.
"Rewrite 10,000+ plug-ins & scripts" is disingenuous, to start with.
Nobody anywhere is asking you to make those changes right away - & indeed, probably most people wouldn't even perceive the most difficult changes.
Admit it: You just don't want to change it.
Personally i do want to see change. We don’t today have consensus in the team to make that change, so posting as GIMP_Official i can’t say what will happen yet, but we’ve agreed last yearto discuss it further. It’s more work than it might at first appear. I should have said, some things that would be affected include... rather than change... we wouldn't be rewriting all the scripts you're right, sorry.
Is there a way to follow the progress on thst topic? Is there something like a PEP (see Python) or Pull Request one could subscribe to?
not right now, sorry. It would likely be considerably more than a single pull request, involving legal contracts, moving the Web site and all the bugs, and a lot more. This is not to say it should not be done, but if you heard about the GIMP 3 release you'd presumably also hear about a name change. Thanks for asking!
I *really* hope PhotoGIMP continues to work with this version or I'll have to stay on 2.x
it will probably take a while for third-party plug-ins and add-ons and settings packs to catch up. Contact them and ask, so they know it’s wanted :-)
new release just happened!

https://github.com/Diolinux/PhotoGIMP/releases/tag/3.0
woohoo!
Must upgrade GIMP, STAT!
from the bottom of my heart, thank you for making so much work freely available for everyone on this planet.

This... is the way...
congratulations 🎉🎊
I've been waiting for this moment for literally years, congratulations!!! Thank you all involved in this, good job! :)
congratulations on this big release <3
@GIMP@floss.social slurs against disabled people are so 1825, change the name you ableist fucks
@GIMP actually for me it always was the sexual thing. Today I learned.. why are we not even remotely talking about changing the name?!
@GIMP
The discussion about the name is very old. It is even in the FAQ:

https://www.gimp.org/docs/userfaq.html#i-dont-like-the-name-gimp-will-you-change-it

And there was a fork, Glimpse, but they could not find enough contributors:

https://news.itsfoss.com/glimpse-gimp-fork-archived/

And that's how open source works. If no one cares, nothing will change.
yeah I know all that. But the thing is, the more I grow away from my nerdy teenage self, I understand it less and less. The "coincidence" while finding an acronym is just incomprehensible. It might have been "funny" back then, but now it isn't any more. The FAQ reads like the project didn't grow up which is sad because the program is great and the new people involved are as well. So I wonder why keep that cruft.
Remember, renaming costs money and is a lot of work that the team might prefer to invest in the product.
Should gimp be renamed? Probably.
Do I want to take on the work and the costs? Definitely not.
They aren't open to changing the name. If they were and actually said we want to but we need to do such and such and it costs money they would actually get support to help. Right now they are just being obtuse.
For what it's worth, this issue was discussed during a team meet-up in the last few years: https://developer.gimp.org/conferences/wilberweek/2023-amsterdam/#gimp-renaming

It's one of the many things that developers want to come back to, after we recover from the 3.0 release.
y’all might want to update the FAQ if it’s an actual possibility! Based off of that it sounds less like “its difficult to change such an old name” to “we won’t change it and in fact it’s for some principled reason”

@mxjaygrant@triangletoot. Thanks.. It’s on the agenda to discuss, which would include the practicalities. As the individual (@barefootliam) responding in this message, i’ll say ii hadn’t noticed that FAQ comment before today and will suggest changing it, if whoever wrote it isn’t too wedded to it. We have parts of the Web site going back almost 30 years!
thanks for taking your time to reply here. Appreciated!
It is freezing in hell! Congratulations!!!

Waiting for that a .deb version is released for Debian/Ubuntu.
change the name!
congratulations to the whole team!
Congratulations 🥳!
You now deserve a vacation!
Donated some money for that!
thank you so much!
congratulations!
Congratulations a big achievement, an amazing program. Thank you.

Thank you very much.
I have mixed feelings about this as I know it will 1. probably be as clunky to use as its predecessors, 2. probably not have backward compatibility including breaking plugins.

But as there is no FOSS alternative to GIMP with the breadth of functionality of it, that I'm aware of, we just have to suck it up.

Congratulations, I guess?
FTR, the screenshot still says "3.0.0 RC2". If the final release is actually out, you should change that.
was a web hosting cache problem, hmm, i’ll update the image manually! thanks!
Much Love to #GIMP.

Used it to create all of my channel's hundreds of video thumbnail / cover graphics. 🎨 :gimp:
#GIMP
When will you get rid of the discriminatory name for the software package and heed the good suggestion of GLIMPSE as name?
What does that acronym stands for? Genuine question.
GNU Image Manipulation Program. Before it joined the GNU project it was called IMP.
You're saying that the acronym was a coincidence, and not intended at all?!
the people who first made GIMP were entirely unaware that the word had connotations beyond being the name of a character in a film. Some of the current developers also have no experience of this - with English not their first language.
Yes, that's OK. But it still is no reason to not change the name now. One can always learn and do things better than before. @Mgfp
Congratulation! 🎉
Someone reported something similar. A workaround until we fix this (for 3.0.2!) is to switch from gridview to list. Could you try and confirm?
oh HE'LL yeah
Nice birthday gift for me :D
sending a massive thank you to everyone that contributed!
did it finally fix the issues with Wayland, in particular when using a tiling window manager like Sway? I basically haven’t been able to use GIMP in years after migrating to Wayland, and when I have to use it I have to start an X11 session just for that.
there are still some issues with Wayland, including a lack of colour management, and an inability to remember window positions between sessions, and probably more. You could try it, though, making sure you have GIMP::Windows::SIngle Window Mode enabled. May need to experiment with preferences/window managememt. At least one gimp dev usees niri with waybar on wayland.
"we feel that in the long run, sterilization of language will do more harm than good."

Oof, yeah, not installing this every again.
Installation bug, duplicated text in buttons

weird, can you file a bug report please? There's a link near the bottom of gimp.org - thanks!
Pls change the name.
Checked the changelog and loved ALL of it. All my frequent pain points as occasional business/industry (not design) user: SOLVED! Danke! 🤲
🥳🥳🥳
you embarrass yourselves every day you keep this name, honestly. Just peculiar behaviour.
coward very much... Name it as you wish as longs as it makes me having fun editing pictures 👏👏👏
yipes, i’m usually super careful about that, good catch!
I love what you’ve done with the app, this seems like a significant upgrade, but *please* consider renaming it to something that isn’t also a slur. Surely it’s not worth the constant hassle and having your team’s literal decades of hard work disregarded and belittled because you are stubborn about it being OK to be just a *little* bit bigoted.
Great ! What's next could be a sort of no A***e sync form desktop to notebook to app and back again - I would adore it, donate and love it.
@GIMP Hmm. Last time i tried, i couldn't but turn GIMP into Photoshop. Is that easier now? I don't need all this AI stuff....
@GIMP
we do not include any “AI stuff” in GIMP. (we are also not trying to be a PhotoShop rip-off, GIMP is a different program)
happens to all of us! thanks for fixing it I'll delete my reply
still using the same "tee-hee we're such edgelords" name, eh? bless...
actually no problem (although thank you for deleting it).
Wasn't a name change in the works?
it has not been ruled out for the future. It’s actually a lot more work than it sounds - e.g. could affect the plug-in API, as well as docs, translations, and the entire codebase.
of course

thank you for the fantastic free software 🤩
Congratulations on the release. It's amazing the history GIMP has now. Almost 30 years old, and I heard from Jill on the Destination Linux podcast ( @Jill_linuxgirl ) that it was even used for movie production in the early days, the 2000 movie "The Perfect Storm" to be precise, but it has come such a long way since then.
ура, побѣда
GIMP 4.0 when?
not for a day or two at least ;-)
congratulations! 🎉
this is amazing, finally, it was a long, looooong way 🤩
It came down the pipe for EndeavourOS this evening. I'll be looking at it later.
big congrats for this awesome milestone. I've been using GIMP for a lot of years and I could not live without it now. I'm very exciting for the new version and I wanted to thank you all these efforts.
Congratulations!!
BRAVO, GIMP. I've been a long time fan. Keep up the great work!
Hooray! I don't know how long I've been using GIMP, but I think it was the one of the first image manipulation program I ever used ... and I am still using it.

Cogratulations for the release! Thank you for your hard work! GIMP is amazing!
oh WOW Finally!
Non-destructive editing! Back in business!! Awesome!

🙇 yay congrats !!
thank you for the work! I made my first donation today. I use #GIMP I think as long as it exists on Linux. I hope my people take the opportunity to be reminded and make a donation today, too! :gimp:
#GIMP
You did it! YOU DID IT! Congratulations!!!
are you ever going to fix the name?
looking foreward to it - thanks for all the work and patience
Merci pour l’ajout de l’alt text à l’image 🙏. Et évidemment merci pour tout le travail sur GIMP et cet achèvement qu’est cette version 3.0.
Thanks for your good work! 👏
congrats team! 🎉🎉🎉
congrats on the 3.0 release <3
Congratulations! You people are fantastic, thank you. 👏 🤩

Also ignore the confused people that think this – of all moments – is the right time and place to address questionable naming decisions.
Hey GIMPS, thanks for that amazing Upgrade and many hours of hard work! i would like to ask very gently when gimp 3.0 will be available on linux mint; does anyone here know?
are you gonna change the slur thing
congrats on that achievement.
Congrats!
te vas a cambiar la foto de perfil @rsf92 ?
Great! Much thank you 🥰
I never knew you cared. This is not a joke? Better get the gimp.

I use Linux because it generally does what I do every day. There are a few ok programs out there like gimp, blender, and kdenlive. I mean they get the job done mostly without me having to reboot. Really I had a lot of pirate software and I could not open the gateway for them to report home in Windows is what brought me to Linux. (sorry I thought I was responding to Tom Ellard aka Lard Motel)

Thank you for all the hard work! I've been using GIMP for a while.

(Sorry about all the angry replies, I wish they'd be civil about how they disagree! Change the "offensive" name if you want, but keep up the good work with the actual software! <3)
Would you consider changing the name to something less offensive? I would like to recommend the software to my daughters, but I can't add long as the name is an ableist slur.
have you considered dropping "Program" from the name? It's implicit that's a program and then the acronym would not be a bad word anymore (I think, English is not my first language).

Is it on alpine repos's yet?
awesome. thank you for the new version. great job with it. i will need a computer with a bigger screen to run it like i would like. because the side toolbars are getting too fat and cannot be reduced further. now i'm working with one toolbar which has tool options, layers, brushes, paths etc. also have to modify a few of my "scm" scripts. but don't mind my griping. again great job!
