IKR! I wasn't expecting to pick up that much stuff, but there's been a fair bit of activity with LoRaWAN around here over the past years, and a few local amateur radio groups, so maybe that's seeded it?
It seems my node has only seen around 16 directly, though some of those are quite a few miles away (one 20-30 miles); I guess once there's a bit of a mesh you can hop a reasonable way, and maybe my local topography helps?
The first day I went out looking I picked up two nodes and then all of sudden I was shown nodes in Chicago which is like 150km away... I don't know if it was a weird MQTT thing or if they travel like a virus between nodes. I deleted them and they have not returned.
you can get pretty crazy distances with LoRa if the conditions are right. A former colleague hit a LoRaWAN basestation in Rotterdam from the top of Snowdon, the highest mountain in Wales once.
The receiving antenna might have been decent, but his transmitter was just a 10cm handheld one; but that's heading towards 400 miles!
orkneys! Magnificient! OHS is Open Hardware Summit which is in Scotland (Edinburgh) in May, first time I believe its been in the UK and I know @amcewen plans to go so just wondered. Yeah, I am a long way from Scotland in N Wales... I should really grab a meshtastic device and see if I can reach Liverpool!

My node has been up for 50 minutes and had contact with 51 other devices, including one from over the border into Wales
