Today, the Public Health Agency of Canada's National Micro Lab (NML) confirmed that the teen in critical condition has avian influenza H5N1. Genomic sequencing result indicates that the virus is related to the avian flu viruses from the poultry outbreak in B.C. (Influenza A (H5N1), clade 2.3.4.4b, genotype D.1.1). This clade is different from the one circulating in U.S. dairy cattle.
