TIL Betamax had higher quality images than VHS if recorded at the base β1 speed. However, it was rarely offered on Betamax VCRs after 1979 because its recording time on a standard Betamax tape was only 1 hour. So the image quality advantage over VHS was essentially removed for most of the format war
