TIL legendary session bassist Leland Sklar put a switch on his bass that does nothing. He calls it the "producer switch" — when a producer asks for a different sound, he flips the switch (making sure the producer can see), and carries on. He says this placebo has saved him a lot of grief.

Made a game. Pretty simple 3-color scheme. Very late in the process producer realized that life was passing him by or some thing like that and wanted to change one of the colors.

Make it darker. Hm, no, that doesn't work. Make it more like so and so …

I pretended to follow the instructions, until I reached the original color. Producer was very satisfied 😉
When I used to do live sound, I always had a spare subgroup fader or two that weren't used. Whenever someone approached the FOH desk and had a "suggestion," I'd goose that fader and ask them if that was any better.

Worked every time.
