TIL that during the 1908 London Olympics, the United Kingdom ordered every country to dip its flag in honor of King Edward VII. All except the United States did so, with the American flag bearer stating, "This flag dips to no earthly king."

That was true for a long time. Throughout the 70's and 80's, the US didn't bow to the Soviets. That was the time when the US told the Soviets what they can or cannot do.
But look at today: America is scared stiff of the midget in the kremlin. Can't do this, can't do that, what if they escalate, oh god, don't let them escalate, let's sit on our hands and hope it'll go away.
