TIL in the 1940s, Dr. John C. Cutler led US-funded syphilis experiments in Guatemala, secretly infecting prisoners and patients, including a terminally ill woman, to study penicillin. Justified as "for the greater good," it remained hidden until 2010 when the US government issued a formal apology.
