Remember to consider your server admin's storage bill before posting unnecessarily long video content though, it might have a limit 😅
Yeah, good point! And some servers may have lower (or higher) limits depending on whether the admin can afford the storage.
Does the limit caution apply to YouTube videos or just the videos we create? And if I share a long YouTube video a while back would it be helpful to delete it now?
If you're posting a link to media hosted elsewhere (such as YouTube, Bandcamp etc), then the limit doesn't apply at all.

The limit is only if you're uploading files attached to your post.

Thank you for everything you do, Fedi Tips
Aww... thank you! 😊 You're being very kind, I'm very glad if these accounts and sites are helping!
You have answered questions I didn't know I had and pointed out things that I hadn't realized I might need. I boost a lot of your content because it's not just the new guys that need it.
Cheers, that's very nice to hear! I hope these are useful for as many people as possible!
Is 99MB the default for Mastodon?

I've only ever seen the limit go to 40MB especially for the bigger instances.
They upped the standard limit recently, but the limit may vary depending on what your particular server has decided to do.
Is the file size under 99MB?
Your sever might not support the HEVC codec.
Now you're talking over my head.😂 It's okay. I don't create that many videos for sharing. I do appreciate the help.
HEVC is just a fancy name for the latest kind of video format used by some phones. Apple's iPhones use it as standard now I think?

Unfortunately not every online service is compatible with it yet 😦

There is usually a setting on phones that lets you choose between HEVC and a more widely used format, it usually says something like "more compatible" as the other option.
Hi there: I'm brand new to Mastodon and struggling to find my around. I signed up a few days ago to "@bookstodon" but I've decided that's not the server for me. Is there a way to close that account down and start over? Thanks! #newhere

Hi 🙂

People on Mastodon have the option of moving their accounts to other servers while keeping their followers and follows.

However, as you've only just started, there's no point doing a transfer because you have no followers yet, so you might as well just close the account and sign up for a new account on a different server. (There are instructions for deleting accounts here: https://fedi.tips/how-to-delete-your-mastodon-account/)

Was there a particular kind of server you were looking for?
Thanks! Yes, I'm a film critic and reviewer, so I'm looking for servers that primarily relate to film and cinema. I''m also very eclectic and my interests extend into other areas as well. Maybe a server with a broad range of interests? Thanks again!
Most interactions occur with people on other servers, so don't worry too much if you can't find a server that fits you exactly.

If you're looking for a new place, I'd recommend curated lists as they try to screen for reliability and responsible moderation. Mastodon has an official one at https://joinmastodon.org/servers and I run one at https://fedi.garden
hm, are you sure this is a mastodon-specific function and not a part of activitypub specification? because i'm confused… here's the best i could quickly find, but this draft also mentions mastodon for some reason :-/

https://swicg.github.io/activitypub-data-portability/
I mentioned Mastodon because the initial question was about Mastodon 🙂

Not every AP Fediverse platform has this fully implemented yet, for example PeerTube doesn't (although it does have some parts of it).
@bookstodon welcome, Thomas!

Mastodon has a migration feature, but as your account is pretty new, it is probably easier to just delete it and start anew. If you go to Settings > Account > Account settings, there should be a 'Delete account' at the bottom of the page.

There are many ways to find new servers. Here is just one of many methods: https://instances.social/
@bookstodon

Bear in mind that instances.social doesn't curate its servers at all, it's just an automated list. There may be servers on the list that aren't reliable or safe.
