"I am trying to decipher the language of insects
they are the tongues of the future
their vocabularies describe buildings as food
they can depict dark water and the veins of trees
they can convey what they do not know
and what is known at a distance
and what nobody knows
they have terms for making music with the legs
they can recount changing in a sleep like death
they can sing with wings
the speakers are their own meaning in a grammar without horizons
they are wholly articulate
they are never important they are everything"

--W. S. Merwin, "After the Alphabet"

I found a whole trove of Edward Gorey stuff!
Black and white sketch. On the left, a huge white bear is standing on his hind legs on a lake, wearing old fashioned ice-skates. He's carrying a large plate of biscuits and is wearing a veil. Opposite him on a cliff is a man in Victorian-style clothes. The bear is handing the man a biscuit. In the top left corner, text reads

A Future Unremembered Poet of the Seventeenth Century accepts a Christmas Cookie from the Great Veiled Bear
I had some of this piece as Christmas cards, along with a few other Gorey illustrations! I love him so much
I can't believe how many people I've found on here who love him 🥰
