TIL - In the 1970s East Germany in effort to create an export invented nearly unbreakable glass. Attempting to export no one wanted a product that doesnt break. 120 million glasses were made before reunification, they are still used 50years later. Today the technology is used to make Gorilla glass.

Yeah, that's awesome, right? There was just recently a very interesting feature in the German "nano" TV magazine (starting at 20:50) about this "superfest" glass: https://www.3sat.de/wissen/nano/240315-sendung-epigenetik-armut-hinterlaesst-spuren-im-erbgut-nano-100.html 👨‍🔬📺

"The main customer was the GDR gastronomy. The intended sale in the Federal Republic did not take place.

“With Coca Cola, for example, they said: Why should we use a glass that doesn't break? We make money with our glasses. […] The dealers said understandably: Who would saw off the branch he was sitting on?” (Eberhard Pook)"
