I've been trying to boil down what happened at the recent US election in my head, and here's my conclusion:

Political abuse (as a direct analogy to domestic abuse) seems to be an apt description for what is going on in western democracies right now:
Abusers = right wing populist parties
Abused = voters voting for above parties
Family of abused = everyone else

hot take: engaging meaningfully with said voters is a necessary step to kicking the abusers to the curb.
