I think the real problem here is that the rich and corporate have a stranglehold on the economy and don't want anything to change, so they block anything remotely threatening to them. With the aid of their compliant politicians and media allies, of course.
How we overcome this I have no idea, especially with misinformation and scare campaigns being so much easier to spread nowadays. :/
