I've been wondering: Where does the expression “dropping an album" actually come from?

I have to admit that I take exception to this particular figure of speech.

I don't “drop an album”.

When I release an #album, I (usually) put work and heart and soul into it. It's precious to me and it sure as f is not something I simply "drop" and I also don't want it treated like something I "dropped" (though sadly that's what often happens).

Maybe I'm overreacting but My. Albums. Don't. Get. Dropped.

It's from Hip Hop. Dropping the needle unto a vinyl record became "dropping a beat". When doing old school DJing/scratching, you also kind of drop (or throw) the records unto the turntable. "Dropping a record" in this context simply means putting it on the turntable and playing it in a timely manner. And, if it's an exclusive dubplate or a brand new release, then when you "drop a record", it also means that it's the first time someone plays it in public. It's not a bad thing.
