On Easter Monday, 24 April 1916, the Easter Uprising (An tÉirí Amach na Cásca) began. The Irish Volunteers and Citizen Army seized the General Post Office (GPO) and several key buildings in Dublin and demanded Irish sovereignty. Pádraig Pearse read out the Proclamation of Independence at 12:04pm from the steps of the building after his men had seized the GPO. 1/2
