Bologna has won the European Road Safety Award 2024.

They did it by doing four things:

- Designated 70% of the city as a 30 km/h zone
- Invested €24 million in new pedestrian areas and cycle paths
- Launched public communication campaigns and a sustainable mobility ambassador programme
- Increasing police patrols to raise awareness and enforce traffic laws

My morning commute today. Except I need a better word than ‘commute’ for when you cycle or walk to work, so there’s time to enjoy the sunrise.

Water’s edge, mid-city Aarhus, not long after 8am today, shortly before sunrise. The sky is grey-blue, cloudless. The docks and piers across the harbour are dark, almost silhouettes with tall and low buildings in striking shapes – a huge angular crane; a narrow oblong skyscraper; a triangular apartment block; a geodome. Behind them, a stripe of deep pink and orange across the horizon. The high-tide sea is bulging with dark blue ripples, almost black, with orange and pink reflected on the surface. Just to the left, a white-and-red trawler with bunting and white Christmas lights that twinkle in reflections on the water. This is not, I think, the view you imagine when you hear the word ‘commute’.
