so this may be old news to a lot of people, but using the linux media player mpv and pointing it at a youtube url results in just playing the video. I have yet to run into an ad (unless it's in the content of the video). Combined with a tool like pipe-viewer, which let you search youtube from the terminal, there's no need to fight the ad blocker battle with youtube. There is another utility called ytfzf, but it looks like it's no longer actively maintained.
