Without any seeming irony Northern rail have announced that to improve service reliability they are reducing the number of trains running at Christmas....
There are some plans to actually improve services (i.e. run the full current timetable again) sometime in the future, but for now, to make sure trains run on time there must be less of them.
Yup, taking the service back into state hands is really working for passengers.

So if you think the privatised rail operators have been a disaster, but are equally concerned that nationalisation might not be the answer to the railways problems, you'll be interested in Go-Op a cooperatively run rial service in the South West which will compete with GWR.
There's many steps to go yet, but this looks like an interesting organisational innovation that offers a different future for UK railways.
Lets hope they can make it work.
