Just finished Jerusalem: The Biography by Simon Sebag Montefiore. There’s been a bit of history that happened since he finished this edition, but it really was an excellent book.
Montefiore does an incredible job giving life to historic events and telling the stories of the names of people in the history books. He tells the story of the city in all its layers of complexity and with a compelling style.
Beginning with the Roman destruction of the Second Great Temple and sacking of the city, he backs up and then goes from Judaism, to Paganism, to Christianity, to Islam, to the Crusades, to the Malamuks, to the Ottomons, to the Mandate, to modern Israel, telling the stories of the people along the way.
An engaging and compelling read.
