#deltachat

Finally convinced my non-techy family member's to move from Signal to Delta Chat messenger.

Setup was a piece of cake and we now have 4 x iOS devices, 3 x MacOS laptops, 2 x Windows laptops, 3 x Android devices, including 1 x GrapheneOS and 1 x LineageOS,, and two Linux Mint computers connected seamlessly as one Family Chat group.

Not one single byte of personal information required nor a single SIM card needed between us, though of course we all have them.

The security benefits and other bonuses provided by Delta are great but the key here was a de-centralised messenger that allows easy setup for family groups across multiple platforms.

Well, that's it! I am completely open source finally. No Google account. No Apple ID. No Microsoft, Meta, etc accounts.

The only organisation's who have my real email address are my bank, my government and my education providers.

wth is wrong with signal now ? I'm still not even using it. XP
I recently changed phones. While trying to transfer Signal from one device to the other, there was an error and my Signal account was instantly locked for 7 days.

I contacted Signal support and was informed it was a security function and there was nothing they could do. I contacted them again to plead my case and never heard from them again.

I am sick of being at the bottom of the food chain with these companies and want more flexibility as far as interoperability goes.

Delta Chat gives me this in spades.
I’m trying to do the same with my family right now, so I’ll tell you my results ☺️. I have a question, I know that I can put it in 2 devices, but Is it posible to install in a third one?
Absolutely, I have it on three Android phones and a 15" MacBook Pro running Linux Mint myself. All devices are synchronised using one profile.

My phones are running GrapheneOS, LineageOS and Google Android respectively. I have a single SIM I swap between them as my needs or desires change.

All seamless and so, so easy.

the user needs some explanation about the storage in the server. 400MB could be not enough for a 15 years old kid 🤣🤣.
I'm sorry. Could you please rephrase that?

I'm not sure what you mean.
nah! It's only that I read that the limit of messages was 400Mb, and I think that my son will used in an afternoon with their friends sending videos and audios. So I have to explain him carefully.
no worries about the storage. 95% of users onboard with a single device (mobile usually) and they will not use any storage at all. When a message is retrieved by the app, the message gets deleted on the server. Chatmail is very unlike classic e-mail in that it forgets everything quickly. The app has it and if you set up a second device you transfer the *full history** and you can remove it from the first device and everything works. Every device is a full independent backup.
Awesome, I did not know about the redundancy.

Cheers.
So is it not possible to apply moderation to a group chat? Sometimes we want to delete a chat that violates our group rules. I didn't see a description and role feature in a group chat.
Yes, I've just checked, and there is a message delete function.

How it works in terms of group moderation I'm not sure.

My basic understanding is each group member has the same rights/power.

I am unaware of an 'administrator' function though.

#deltachat is geared towards private group chats. In small groups technical moderation is not so important. A subset of people can always create another chat simply and continue there. Technical admins can only help so much. Maybe it's even the admin that is the problem?

There are >100 people chats e.g. from #38c3 or #fossdem25 that work quite fine. But YMMV

If you want Telegram-style channels with public subscription, then yes, some administration is needed.
