‘Nine Winter-y Words to Warm the Cockles’
from BBC Radio 4

“Now here's a word to love on a frosty morning: “apricity” is a now obsolete word that means “the warmth of the sun in winter”. E.G.: “The apricity of today's sun feels like a warm blanket.” It was in 1623 that lexicographer Henry Cockeram recorded (or invented) the word in his book The English Dictionarie: Or, An Interpreter Of Hard English Words. It never stuck. Perhaps it's about time we brought it back.”

Brodie appreciates the apricity of the low winter sun and often stands facing it to bask in its glow. This was on his absolute favourite walk up the riverbank today. It’s a wet and uncouth place, but it’s full of scents and tracks and small surprises. He zoomed around for a bit, splashing and playing land dolphin…then he had this contemplative moment of pure joy!
