Skype is shutting down in May. I've been using it to speak with my grandmother, and I am looking for an alternative, with the following features:
* can do live subtitles (in French)
* works without a phone number/sim card
* can call your contacts and be dialed (i.e. not only invite by email/calendar/url…)
* simple UI/UX (with big buttons) is far more important than feature rich.

I know various things that do some of the above, but I'm not sure what (other than Skype) does all of it.

Any help?
Have a look at #Matrix not sure if all the features you requested are supportet, but its a good system
are you delusional? I'm having trouble understanding matrix ui and I'm a blender user.
and i know it's a protocol not a client but if you can show me a matrix client that my grandma could use i'd be very happy about that.
As I said, I don't know if all requirements are met. In my opinion, Cinny (https://cinny.in/) is the simplest Matrix client, so I'd give it a try.

Element is the reference client (https://element.io/app).

You may need to test one or two clients to see what works best for your grandmother.
okay this looks like a nice client but I'd if my grandma wasn't hypothetical I'd be concerned about this project not seeming to have huge community backing.

I also can't tell if it even supports video chat from what is says on its site, let alone subtitles. I'm doubtful this features have sufficient thought behind it if they are not even mentioned.
