I'm kinda curious how mechanical typewriters used to handle languages with diacritics. Did they need extra keys or did people have to backspace and type over the glyph?

here’s a picture of one. It’s been about 35 years since I used one, but IIRC the mechanism was you typed the letter, then the key for tilde/umlaut and what happened was the machine would go back one movement and print the diacritic there, over the letter. This didn’t play well with uppercase letters I think.
