This week I've been mainly reading, no. 190.

Howard Hibbard's Caravaggio (1983) is a good survey of the life & art of the artist, based round an account of (just) the firmly attributed paintings. Hibbard offers few speculations & grounds his biographical elements in the historical consensus. The account of the works is insightful & well-judged, but overall the book remains a little underwhelming given the excitement Caravaggio's work can elicit; a good but not a great book.
