In the wake of Musk's Nazi salute, it's time for this PSA again.

Elon Musk’s autism “self-diagnosis” is a joke. As in, a literal joke on Saturday Night Live.

This vicious, evil bastard IS NOT AUTISTIC. He's a faker. He lies. About everything. Always.

Self-diagnosis is immensely important and must be supported.

But not when a criminally selfish billionaire abuses it as an excuse for causing huge harm to the world.

He's not one of us. We MUST disclaim him.

@actuallyautistic #ActuallyAutistic
@actuallyautistic couldn’t he be autistic AND terrible? Never heard of any diagnosis that could only apply to saints.
Why are you so eager to believe him on this one particular thing when he lies about everything else?

I would believe he's autistic if there is any evidence that he is autistic. But there is none whatsoever.

If you just take his word for it (which wasn't even serious – again, IT WAS A JOKE), then you're effectively enabling him and his lies.

I think the point is that "person is trash" does not mean "person cannot possibly be autistic". There may be other more valid reasons to disbelieve this particular specimen of trash. However, being autistic does not exempt one from being an a'hole. @eirias @actuallyautistic
@actuallyautistic

Sure. But, by the same token, just being an asshole doesn't make someone autistic.

And that seems to be all the “evidence” there is.

Unfortunately there seem to be a lot of people in our community for whom that seems to be enough.

I don't get it. So many people are eager to label evil people as autistic, without any evidence.

E.g., about a decade ago there was this insane trend to diagnose Hitler as autistic.

It's immensely harmful to autistics.
If someone evil wanted to deliberately discredit Autism, and especially self-diagnosed autism, wouldn't they claim it on National television? @mcdutchie @actuallyautistic

On principle, I don't like questioning someone who claims to be autistic. Even someone like him, who may well end up doing us a great deal of harm and who, to be honest, I do have my doubts about But, what strikes me is that he is just incredible emotionally stunted. He seems to be stuck in awkward teenager mode. Just look at the way he likes to dress up in weird costumes and his immature and flawed fixation with space travel. Not to mention that he seems incapable of taking responsibility for anything, not least his own children.
@actuallyautistic

The principle is sound. I don't like questioning someone who claims to be autistic either.

But in this particular case, the claim is so obviously spurious and so harmful, that it is a much greater harm *not* to question it.

Because #Musk now single-handedly defines the public impression of what it is like to have an #autistic person in charge. And that reflects on all of us, for decades to come.

That is why we must oppose this with all our might.

I agree with you. However, the damage has been largely done, even though I can't help noticing that he seems to have stopped claiming it since he didn't get the reaction he was hoping for, whatever the fuck that was supposed to be.
The trouble is, that many people still believe it, because it suits them to do so. I am afraid that he will grab the claim with both hands, if it is brought up again...if only to flog some kind of cure. @mcdutchie @eirias @actuallyautistic
@actuallyautistic
More than likely and especially if he feels it benefits him in some way. In so many ways, very like the eternal teenager he seems to be stuck in, it's all about the attention.
Narcissism begins early...andI never goes away. The few I have known personally, always struck me as being cases of arrested development. @mcdutchie @eirias @actuallyautistic
@actuallyautistic
It certainly fits him better, than autism ever did. Although, that's not to say that he can't be both.
@actuallyautistic
True. As he obviously found out and we all know, there's little benefit to claiming that you are autistic and the potential for a great deal of harm. It hardly fits the profile.
@actuallyautistic

Yikes. I hadn't even considered that possibility yet... Elon Musk flogging a fake cure for autism in some sort of evil pact with Trump and RFK Jr. <shudder>

It wouldn't even shock me at this point, to be honest.
Remember that church who claimed that drinking bleach cured Autism, and homosexuality? Then Trump said that people drinking bleach would protect them from Covid. Yes, we should be afraid. @pathfinder @eirias @actuallyautistic
@actuallyautistic

I fear you are right, but I don't think that means we should just take it lying down. Hopefully, the damage can be reversed and repaired in time.

And yeah, I also noticed he stopped claiming it. Yet more evidence against it being anything like sincere.

But far too many in the autistic and neurodivergent community do keep claiming it.

Step one to repairing the harm Musk has done is to stop this collective self-harm in our community.
@actuallyautistic This isn't the fault of actually autistic people, but autism is more and more frequently used by the powerful as a plausible cover for sociopathy.
@actuallyautistic So, I understand what you’re saying, and for that reason I’d like to shift this from questioning self-diagnoses, because that’s not a door I want to open, even if it’s to smack him in the face with it, and toward what one reveals/proclaims their self-diagnosis for, because that is a behaviour that can apply with and without self-diagnosing.

He cites his autism to silence criticism of his flagrant cruelty; he says he is innocent by dint of idiocy.
