#OnThisDay, 19 Apr 1967, Kathrine Switzer becomes the first woman to complete the Boston Marathon as a registered runner, despite the organiser physically trying to stop her.

She ran it again in 2017, 50 years later.

Katherine Switzer running along a road in a grey tracksuit. She is a white woman with dark hair. There are several other men running alongside her, also in running gear. They are protecting her from a man in a blazer who is attempting to rip off the number pinned to her back.

can you even imagine being that much of a weak prick?
So many of them, still trying to stop women doing man stuff. Pathetic little crybabies. @CarveHerName
Most of the men around Switzer are running with her as protection. Just the dude in the suit has a problem. An anger management problem.
I've always thought that scene perfectly encapsulated misogyny: the men who were capable of running the race were delighted to have a woman join them. It was the man who couldn't run the race who was big mad that a woman was running it.

the story of the race director who tried stopping her is nuanced, however. Consider that he became a friend and supporter of Switzer.

Things aren't always as black-and-white as we believe they are.

@zeh
Ok good he came around but it is
NEVER ok to lay hands on anyone!
It's aggressive and I want to hear a thousand apologies for such action.
@zeh
@zeh Where is the nuance? If he grovelled, and she accepted his apology, it still does not excuse the way he assaulted a woman...in public...who was registered to run. Imo, assaulting a woman is inexcusable. @MaryAustinBooks @CarveHerName @dropbear
