The conference "The Press and the Holocaust" that aims to contribute to a more comprehensive and all-encompassing understanding of the Holocaust by discussing how the European press covered nazi anti-Semitism and the Holocaust, begins tomorrow.

#OnThisDay, 11 Nov 1865, Dr Mary Edwards Walker receives the Medal of Honor from US President Andrew Johnson for her services as a field surgeon in the American Civil War.

A lifelong "dress reformer", she wore trousers under short dresses and eventually switched to trousers and jackets. She was frequently arrested for her choice. "I don't wear men's clothes, I wear my own clothes."

An academical debate about burial mounds must be the ultimate 'hills I'd like to die on' battle.

You know what we could bring back? Dutch foot warmers. As far as I've understood back then they were a wooden little box that had a metal tray in them, and in the tray were hot coals. I'm sure we could do some modern low energy alternative of a little box to rest your cold feetsies on. Here's the painting The Lacemaker by Wybrand Hendriks with one of them!

#Histodons #ArtHistory
An 18th century oil painting of a woman making lace on a lace maker's pillow with a little wooden cube thing under her feet just peeking out from her quilted skirts or petticoats. She is wearing a tan jacket, white linen cap, a fichu tucked into her neckline and a pocket. There's a spinning wheel next to her, assorted fabrics and rovings waiting, and in the background there is a little dog sitting and watching, a clock with very long mechanism pulleys, and the view through a series of rooms through multiple doorways. There's a wash basin, ladles, hints of what the rooms may be. It's a slightly dark little painting, but quite realistic, visually striking and pleasant in a structured way. The woman with her tan jacket and salmon red skirt is the only spot of colour and the focus.

I am reading this book and learning a whole lot. About 20th century China, about modern day China, and about the nature of human resistance under the worst threats. And the way history can be weaponized by a regime, and how people can fight back to preserve the truth.

Also, while on the topic of King Arthur legends:

Please for the love of god someone translate Escanor to English!

We have an actual Arthurian love-hate romance for grumpy Sir Kay. How is this not a thing yet?!

I am reading a book about citrus fruits in Italy, and their effects on Italian history and culture, and it is endlessly fascinating.

Also now I am craving both an orange, and a vacation in Italy.

Victorian medicine chest, which contains medications for pain relief, such as opium. It also includes a set of scales, weights, a pill tile, and a spatula. It was probably used in the home or by an apothecary.

Fun fact for my #archaeology peeps:

In last year's census, 2439 people in Hungary declared they were Scythians, and they speak Scythian at home.

🤷‍♀️ 😄 🏹

Doing some #storytelling today at the Aquincum Amphitheater in Budapest 😊 Two-day Roman festival, gladiators, battles, living history, all kinds of fun.

I have two sets of stories, one of little known Greek and Roman myths (such as an alternate version of Achilles' heel), and one of Caucasian Nart sagas (since we have Sarmatian reenactors on site). My little archeologist heart is happy 😊

I find myself in search of images of the obverse of coins struck in Mercia in the time of #Aethelflaed, and my searches online are not successful. Are there any numismatists who can point me at a suitable reference? #histodons #coins #numismatics

During WWI, Marie Curie created a vehicle that contained a hospital bed, a generator, an X-ray machine and photographic darkroom equipment. These “petite Curies" (below) could be driven right up to the Front. Curie also helped train 150 women as radiology technicians.

Because of his willingness to play for segregated audiences, throughout much of his life, Louis Armstrong was called a sellout and an Uncle Tom by many Black Americans, But, in 1957, Satchmo blew up-—blasting Eisenhower to bits for not condemning treatment of Black American students in the South. His passionate words made world headlines, alienated many white fans, and divided Black America.

Topic 10: Hoaxes and secrets

Book:
Mysteries of the Snake Goddess: Art, Desire, And The Forging Of History, by Kenneth Lapatin

This book delves into the questionable origins of the Boston Snake Goddess figurine. To provide background, it also deals with the long history of Minoan forgeries, and Sir Arthur Evans' track record of creating Minoan history and art from excavated artifacts. Good context for Bronze Age Crete and our view of what it was like.

Topic 6: Dictatorships

Book:
Secondhand time: the last of the Soviets, by Svetlana Alexievich

This book was one of the (emotionally) hardest reads I ever had. But it was so worth it. It is a compilation of interviews and personal monologues from hundreds of people, centered on the fall of the Soviet Union. People who were happy, people who were devastated, people who were guilty, and innocent. Nobel Prize well deserved.

Topic 4: Saints

Book:
Furta Sacra: Thefts of Relics in the Central Middle Ages, by Patrick J. Geary

This was a hilarious yet well researched book on the business of stealing relics and justifying the theft with outrageous legends in the Middle Ages. From saints that *wanted* to be stolen all the way to saints who miraculously had two identical corpses so that both rival churches could have one...

#ArcheoMail

This would be a curated subscription to receive short reprorts from various ongoing excavations from around the world. What's happening, what's being found, but really, how is the life of the dig going. Some science, some anecdotes, whatever is interesting to share.

#TravelMail

One of my favorite literary genres is the travel journal or travel memoir. I love reading 19th and early 20th century travel writing. I would also love to subscribe to receive parts of this in the mail; one letter a week (?) from various eras and places in history, recounting travel adventures.

(I mean excerpts from real sources, not fiction.)

Bonus for including sources from a diverse range of travelers.
