So I kept musing about what kind of mail subscriptions I wish existed, and came up with a list. I'm gonna share it with you all 😄
Feel free to add your own ideas. Maybe we'll inspire someone.

(And no, I'm not gonna create any of them bc that would defeat the purpose of me receiving shiny surprises in the mail 😆 )

This is a thread.🧵 1/6

#GeekOutMail

This would be a curated weekly subscription where you receive letters from various experts in niche fields who get to geek out about the coolest parts of their favorite topic.

It could be a wide variety of topics, ranging from underappreciated deep sea animals to collectible coins to sailings ships to comic book history to heritage apple orchards to... whatever. Really. One of my favorite things to do is listen to people talk about things they adore.

#FolkTaleMail

Obviously. I would love a subscription where I regularly receive folklore in the mail. Especially unpublished, archival, freshly collected, newly translated, or little known local folklore from around the world.

#TravelMail

One of my favorite literary genres is the travel journal or travel memoir. I love reading 19th and early 20th century travel writing. I would also love to subscribe to receive parts of this in the mail; one letter a week (?) from various eras and places in history, recounting travel adventures.

(I mean excerpts from real sources, not fiction.)

Bonus for including sources from a diverse range of travelers.

#ArcheoMail

This would be a curated subscription to receive short reprorts from various ongoing excavations from around the world. What's happening, what's being found, but really, how is the life of the dig going. Some science, some anecdotes, whatever is interesting to share.

#TarotArt

OK this is halfway between mail and a subscription box, but whatever.
I imagine receiving one tarot card done by a different artist every time. Uniform size, wildly ranging art styles. And a letter from the artist telling me about the symbolism, the process, the inspiration, the pop culture references, the technique, whatever they feel like sharing. Eventually it could be a full deck, but I would not mind duplicate cards either.

(Feel free to add your own! Also, yes, I know these could be done easier digitally or probably already exist online. But again, I would love snail mail. And a girl can dream 😄)
Alas, my dream lifestyle as an adventurer-folklorist is not yet affordable...
Ok maybe not as a commercial venture, but it could be like a club? Everyone contributes their own niche folklore, and in return gets the mail from the others in the club?
Worth thinking about.

Alas, the time pressures remain... 😢
Many, many years ago, I signed up to receive an historical letter in the mail once a month. They would send you a letter written by someone in history. I think that would be worth reviving. They could be themed: love letters, crisis letters, letters about travel, etc.
I'd definitely subscribe to #GeekOutMail !
I would read the heck out of something like that!
ScienceMail, where someone sends a cool science fact or discovery, like a new exoplanet or interesting chemical. Or a snail species, for actual snail mail.

That's interesting to hear and something that I might like to create. Are you a niche market or are there others like you who would like to subscribe to newsletters by snail mail? Was going to create a poll, but can't see how to do it in Tusky. So, if this is something that you'd like, please reply to this post and tell me what subjects you are interested in, how often you would like to receive a newsletter, which country you live in and how much you would be prepared to pay for it.
which idea would you like to create? :)
also you create a poll by tapping the paperclip, there is an add poll option in there:)
Ah thanks, the one icon I didn't try 😂
Mostly nature, but love learning and sharing all geek/science stuff and possibly history with some folklore thrown in. Currently enjoying learning and sharing about ecology and folklore of wildflowers.
I would definitely love something like that. The more detailed the better; a lot of what I found online was geared towards kids and/or stayed on surface level information.
Great. Yes, I know what you mean. I share that frustration and definitely want to do something for adults who want to learn more. Maybe they're experienced in one field, but want to learn more about another. I'll start thinking about what I can do.
I'd sign up for all of these but if they were monthly not weekly or even bi-weekly. If these were going to come to pass, and it would be AWESOME if they did, the amount of work, care, and management would be significant. These are awesome ideas. Someone better get on these tout de suite!

you are probably right, monthy is more practical. Especially if they are done well :)
I go through cycles where I send out a slew of postcards to friends and those who want them for a few months and then I stop only to start again a few months later. People LOVE #snailmail (as long as it is not bills or adverts lol)
love it! Sometimes I make playlists, burn them onto CDs and send them to my friends via snail mail. It'd be awesome if you could sign up for something like that and receive mixtapes from random strangers!
