Had a fun day at the Roman festival of Floralia at the Aquincum Museum in Budapest.

The Roman-Barbarian ball game devolved into a friendly brawl when fans invaded the field.

Barbarians cheered for gladiators by bouncing and chanting "IF YOU DON'T JUMP YOU'RE ROMANIZED", soccer fan style.

My toddler followed the gladiator fights with enthusiastic cheering and then in the end asked me "do they have booboos?" 🤣

Photo of a lot of half-naked men in a field, some in barbarian trousers and some in Roman kilts, having a free-for-all, surrounded by spectators. The trees of the museum garden are in the background.
Green field in the museum gardens, with a lapidarium building in the background. On the slopes there are hundreds of spectators. In the fieldnare gladiators waiting for the emperor's decision, facing the stands where the emperor sits in a purple toga. In yhe foreground there are half naked men dressed as barbarians, with the letters OSZTARK painted on their backs, imitating sports fans.

Doing some #storytelling today at the Aquincum Amphitheater in Budapest 😊 Two-day Roman festival, gladiators, battles, living history, all kinds of fun.

I have two sets of stories, one of little known Greek and Roman myths (such as an alternate version of Achilles' heel), and one of Caucasian Nart sagas (since we have Sarmatian reenactors on site). My little archeologist heart is happy 😊

Selfie with the ruins of the Amphitheater in the background. I (30s white woman, red hair, glasses) am wearing white and blue Roman garb. Behind me in the arena there are tents and yurts for the reenactors, and a large square of sand for the upcoming gladiator fights.
