Granted, I don’t know more than what I read in this article, but it is very concerning. After all:

Speaking up for the Palestinian people does not mean one is necessarily supporting Hamas.

And the suppression of free speech in the guise of the protection of national security is still the suppression of free speech.

President Trump said immigration offi- cials will be pursuing other student orga- nizers like Mahmoud Khalil, a Columbia University student who helped lead last year's pro-Palestinian demonstrations. "This is the first arrest of many to come," Trump said in a post on Truth Social Mon- day. "We know there are more students at Columbia and other Universities across the Country who have engaged in pro-ter- rorist, anti-Semitic, anti-American activ- ity, and the Trump Administration will not tolerate it." Khalil was detained Saturday night by Department of Homeland Security agents, his lawyer Amy Greer said on Sunday. The agents said they were acting on orders from the State Department to revoke his green card, she said. She didn't immedi- ately return a request for comment on Trump's statement.

The Department of Homeland Security started looking into individuals at Columbia University following the presi- dent's executive order calling on the gov- ernment to use "all available and appro- priate legal tools, to prosecute, remove, or otherwise hold to account the perpetra- tors of unlawful antisemitic harassment and violence," according to a White House official. The White House official said the depart- ment found that Khalil had participated in pro-Hamas rallies and in distributing fliers. The agency presented the informa- tion to Secretary of State Marco Rubio who personally signed off on revoking his legal status. The administration says it is not about free speech, it's about national security.

Rubio said in a post on X Sunday the administration "will be revoking the visas and/or green cards of Hamas supporters in America so they can be deported." The Education Department also said Monday it had sent letters to 60 schools warning them of potential enforcement actions if they don't fulfill their legal obligations to protect Jewish students. The list included Ivy League schools, state universities and small liberal-arts col- leges. During demonstrations at Columbia last year, Khalil held the role of negotiator between his group and the administra- tion, Greer said. Brian Hauss of The American Civil Liber- ties Union, which is closely following the case, said the administration hasn't pointed to any national security concerns beyond Khalil's activities related to politi- cal speech.
