🌎 Northern cardinal (Cardinalis cardinalis) ♀

The northern cardinal is a striking songbird from North America. Males are a brilliant red with a black face mask and a prominent crest, while females (pictured) are a more subdued brownish-red with a reddish crest. They both possess a robust, orange-red conical bill. They are found throughout eastern North America, inhabiting woodlands, gardens, and shrublands. Cardinals are non-migratory, known for their year-round melodious songs, and often seen foraging on the ground or in shrubs.

Conservation status: Least Concern (IUCN 3.1)
