The major of Amsterdam has banned all demonstrations and protests in the city until Thursday.

Do you think this, well, sucks?

Tough luck.

The people of Amsterdam who disagree with city policies (or any other matter, such as an ongoing genocide) currently have no way to express their discontent together with others in public space.

But there's always creative ways. A handful of people gathered together on Dam Square with empty banners and placards to bring out the absurdity of the situation.

There is also underground direct action. When the day crew is driven off the streets, the night crew comes out...
ha yes very true!
In Portugal unless the country is on a special status, it's not possibly to forbid demonstrations.

The authorities can restrict the combination of location/time for security reasons (like another demonstration is already scheduled there, or it's a critical path for emergency services), and some distance from public buildings is required, but not the possibility of doing the demonstration.
The police can however terminate any ongoing demonstration where certain serious crimes are being committed and/or the public order is compromised.
Attempting to terminate a protest can turn it into a riot if the dispersal is resisted, cops escalate, and the crowd counterescalates.
And guess what? They got arrested.

Arrested for walking around together in public space on the streets of Amsterdam with empty placards and banners.

you're an idiot if you compare Femke Halsema to Putin. She has been defending the right to protest, very much against the Dutch government's will. Don't underestimate the extreme pressure she has to deal with.
And please refrain from using ableist language, thankyou
you're calling Halsema an antisemite and you ask me to refrain from using ableist language. Sure.
she fully conflates Jews (such as myself) and Israel. This implies, that I, a Jew, am not Dutch but merely a potential Israeli. Apart from that, even the IHRA definition of antisemitism points out that conflating Jews and Israel is in itself antisemitic. And it is. This genocide is not happening in my name, even though Israel claims to represent me, and Halsema thinks likewise.

i know you probably hear this a lot but as an american it's unbelievable to me that there could be a formal ban on protesting. I mean sure people here sometimes get arrested for protesting but at least it's not actually banned

They are coming close to banning Palestine protests on campuses. I have called for responding with protests at the homes of the largest donors to the offending universities, demanding they cut off the money.
Jesus. Amsterdam is now Hong Kong a few years ago.
