One of the recurring, worn-out rhetorical tropes about games is that they are 'pointless'.

And it oddly reminds me of similar arguments made in favour of fiction writing vs non-fiction writing.

It seems oddly anachronistic to me and I do get a little tired of hearing the praises of escapism and fantasy, when trying to talk about games.

Surely, there are better conversations to be had and less basic arguments to be made as to why games are worth people's time?
