... So what do mastodon programmers do to counter this? They make the default limit on text 500, while allowing uploading of images. Use a link of an uploaded image to the server and it will not display unless you uploaded a copy of it. This is an attempt to give small groups and individuals the power to control their own servers federalized with others as one medium, or is it to perpetuate the social engineering experiment of limiting expression and free exchange of ideas? Bound by no rules or restrictions, each “owner” of a server can exercise unlimited amount of censorship, even to erase all previous content and existence of a participant, without having to report to anyone this ever took place. You are invited to freely participate the one moment, the next all memory of your existence has vanished, and off you go to some virtual reality Guantanamo. Then the server owner can blackmail other servers to block this same entity or risk being dropped from the federation. And this here text is way over 2500 characters, but fits fine in a picture, thanks to the exceptional server owners at libretooth.gr for not being mastodon dictators. Either the federation will organize better and develop a set of rules and mechanisms of justice for the participants or ... Sorry alt readers, not enough space for all of it

Whah!😮‍💨 Whah!😎 My alt text only goes to 1500!🤣 40 yrs ago you had to wait 5 minutes for a pic to load. There were few or no Embedded images on a 2400 baud+- internet. Etc. @yianiris. If ur unhappy with the instances, start your own. You dont know how GOOD you have it. Mastodon servers HAVE TO BE easier to set up than the TEXT DRIVEN JNOS/TCPIP I setup on an 8088/XT in the early 1990s. Had to install it MANUALLY ... Hand created directory structures. Modify TEXT files.

This is not the issue, although you could uplodad and download a/v in newsgroups using uuencode/uudecode converting binaries to text and back.

My 1st analogue phone modem was 1200 and there were slower older models people threw in the trash by then.
If you start any Randy Schartiger videos on the tube you will hear that familiar scritching sound

My Epson hx20 w/ a terminal program I wrote in basic v1.1 could get 300 baud. My CoCo3 never went faster than 2400 baud. It was allegedly capable of 9600 using a hacked os9 kernel & Rs232 pack that utilized the game cart port (so I ran os9 on a ramdisk to free up the port from 512k floppy use), but was never able to get it working. It WAS fun watching dropped packet counts increase in Xmodem as baud rates increased, due to line noise. Modems on phone lines eventually reached zerosum @yianiris

Xmodem ... how do you remember such stuff, it rings a bell now that you mentioned it.

I'd rather work on 60s international tractor than an 80s PC but I envy your bio-RAM working so well :)

I owned a 65 travelall in the 80s and 90s. A beautiful simple to work on, endlessly repairable tank... I called it "Hank".😃 Note the aftermarket rims on this example. The og ones on mine eventually fatigued and split circumferentially; rim blowouts, after 30 years rolling nearly 2 tons around. Otoh when I rebuilt the motor in the early 90s you could still read the valve part number on the valve faces. Parts were getting scarce... I got the very last dual master cylinder from raybestos

These days people will invest into something like this as real estate, with housing in some places becoming more than a dream.

They didn't call me the mopar boy for nothing :)

Mid 80s to late 90s, I donated it to a friend to use as storage in a shipyard, came back and saw someone driving to work daily.

You can only get sick and tired of them, no other defects.

Dodges were my fave. But that IH said Hi! in rearview mirrors and was in a class by itself. A farm truck that could have been a harvesting combine if the 'line setting ticket' was one number different🤣. In 65 it was a $10k vehicle, as were cadillacs, but for entirely different reasons

The same outcome of a server owner censoring expression is when fed servers censor other servers. I am surprised of all people you are not getting it, it is still private property law of the far west. Engineered cannibalism and dictatorial rule, unless there was a federated body of rules and justice processes to protect "liberties".

Yes, but getting shot for what is right is what affects consciousness, playing it safe and legal never got any of us anywhere.

On the other hand, not being shot and not having your doors busted is an indication of not doing enough. Remember, the choke-leash metaphor?
